Welcome to Fairbanks, Alaska
This is the welcome center in Fairbanks. We
are here to see the start of the
Yukon Quest Dog Sled Race.
This is the clock tower in Golden Heart Park, as seen from standing on the Chena River.
It is almost time for the start of the race.
Mushers are adventurous and courageous people,
but these are
the real stars of the sport.
It is about -20 degrees and my toes where
numb, the air was full of excitement
and the barking of impatient dogs.
Right about now, I am standing on my heels
so that my toes
aren't on the frozen ground. Like that would
really help keep my feet warm!
I could hardly complain, knowing I was there
to see off
these adventurous souls who would travel
many frigid miles
before they would see home again.
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 GO! GO! GO!
After the last team leaves, it is time to
go get a hot Cappuccino
and thaw out those toesies!
They are all gone now. We veiwed the starting
line from the middle of the
Cushman Street Bridge. This is the frozen
Chena River.
